MubbCap: Golden Eagles Survive Late Seton Hall Push
Marquette Golden Eagles came back home to a place where they’re undefeated this season after beating Creighton in a thrilling overtime victory. The opponent would not be easy for Marquette playing Seton Hall. The Golden Eagles have been decent against the Pirates at home in the last few years, but the games between these two programs are always close. After Marquette jumped out to a 13 point lead early in the first, it looked like the game would not be close, yet Seton Hall battled back to take the lead at one point in the second half. Golden Eagles pulled it out with some tough basketball down the stretch and won 70-66. That’s another good win to MU’s resume.
Player of the Game: Theo John – One of the bigger bright spots this season has been the play of Theo John inside. He’s been great for Marquette. Big East officials have no idea how to ref him because he is so damn physical compared to others on the court. John notched his first career double-double at Marquette, and the first time he had over 10 rebounds. John pulled down six offensive boards which gave the Golden Eagles extra opportunities. More was asked of him as Ed Morrow left the game with an ankle injury. Also, he did a great job at the free throw line. Before the game, John was a bit under 50% from the line and made some clutch free throws in the final minutes of the game.
Silver Star: Sacar Anim – While John did it inside the painted arc, Anim did it on the perimeter. He played great defense against Myles Powell all game long. Anim established himself as a premier defender on the top guards in the Big East. He did well against Powell who missed eleven shots in the game including a wild three in the final two minutes of the game. Anim didn’t let his offensive game slip though. He finished with 14 points on five-of-10 shooting. This is his second double digit point game in the last three.
Positive: The final push to victory – Marquette played one of the worst halves of the year in the second against Seton Hall. They were sloppy, unprepared and let the Pirates dictate the game. In the final five or six minutes, that all changed and the Golden Eagles found a way to pull out this victory. That’s fantastic especially considering Markus Howard didn’t do much in the second half, and the team found a way to lean on other players on the roster.
Negative: Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers – In the bad years of the Golden Eagles, turnovers were a major thing. They were pretty bad and didn’t get much better for a few years. That showed its head on Saturday with a season-high 20 turnovers. Marquette looked out of sorts at times in the second half leading to mistakes all over the court especially on offense. They will have to clean that up for Tuesday.
Next up: Marquette heads on the road to face Georgetown. This is an improved Hoyas team from years past, but they have an overtime problem. Georgetown went to double overtime on Saturday, so, fatigue may be a factor. Jessie Govan is somehow still in school, and he leads the team offensively. Interested to see who Marquette puts on Govan. Last year, these two teams played a classic that MU ended up winning.
