NBA Twitter Complaining About Super Bowl is an Odd Flex
One of the weirder themes of last night’s Super Bowl was NBA Twitter complaining about the game. From LeBron James to NBA writers looking for more action, there was a sense of ‘This product sucks compared to ours.’ NBA puffed their chest out, and I cannot really blame them. In a Super Bowl week, they had all of the headlines late in the week. We’re going to be talking about the NBA later this week as the trade deadline approaches on Thursday. Yet the complains about a bad product is weird look considering what the NBA has put out for the NBA Finals the last three years.
NBA Twitter acted last night like they have the most unique Finals experience, and it hasn’t been the same two teams in the last four years. Oh wait, that’s what happened with Cleveland and Golden State. At least the games have been close, right? Oh shit, that’s not true either as the Warriors have won the last two NBA FInals by a 4-0 and 4-1 maragin. Since 2010, 50 percent of the NBA Finals have ended in either four or five games, but again, they have the better product. Sure, the 2015 and 2016 Finals were classics, but to act like the Finals is a better product than the Super Bowl is just ridiculous considering the last two seasons.
No matter how shitty this game was last night, the ratings will blow anything the Finals do out of the fucking water. This isn’t going to be close for the leagues. There might be some Patriots fatigue which shows up in the rating, but it’s not going a low number. People are still engaged with the NFL content at a more causal level than they are with the sport of basketball. The league doesn’t care about the older generation (I’m not saying they should cater to them) who watches football every Sunday and Monday. The baby boomers are not tuning to the FInals at the same kind of rate.
NBA Twitter likes getting jokes off, but these fell flat on Sunday.
