Green Bay’s star quarterback Aaron Rodgers will not be playing on Thursday evening when Packers start their first preseason game against Philadelphia Eagles. Brett Hundley will get the start, and while the Hundley start is more interesting than you think, many are raising an issue with Rodgers skipping out on this preseason game. My basic question is how does one series of live football suddenly make Green Bay’s star quarterback much more prepared for the season?

Rodgers is not going to learn anything from a series against Eagles. Let’s call that for what it is. Packers aren’t going to run an in-depth part of their offense either which is also something to consider when thinking about Green Bay’s decision to ‘bench’ the star quarterback. Mike McCarthy is running a vanilla style offense and not showing the rest of the NFL a damn thing in Week 1 of the preseason. Rodgers would run a basic offense, and it’s probably worth getting Hundley the experience against a first-team defense and a good one one at that.

If Packers go 1-2 to begin the year, and you come with the take that ‘Packers would be 3-0 if Rodgers played a series in the first preseason game’, delete your fucking account. This game has zero barring on what’s going to happen during the year.
