Packers Add D-Line Depth With Ego Ferguson
Green Bay Packers made yet another signing in the NFL offseason by claiming Chicago Bears defensive tackle Ego Ferguson off waivers. The one-time third-round draft pick was released by the team last week, and Packers scooped him up before he hit the open market. People love to be critical of Ted Thompson, but the handling of the defensive line this offseason shows he’s learning from his mistakes as he continues to add more bodies to the mix. Ferguson will have to overcome some injury problems to make this roster.
Ferguson is a very young guy, and it’s wise of Thompson to take a look and see if Green Bay can develop him into a player for this team. He didn’t fit in Vic Fangio’s 3-4 defense, and now, he heads to Dom Capers. I doubt he’s out of position as the early draft numbers projected him to be a 3-4 end. Ferguson is only 25 years old so there’s some room for him to grow into the third round pick Chicago thought he was a couple years ago. The worry from him out of college was the strength, and he lacked anger on the field. My guess is Mike Daniels will help with that second part if the former LSU product makes the roster.
Packers are looking alright down the defensive line with Daniels, Dean Lowry, Ricky-Jean Francois, Kenny Clark and Letroy Guion. They still need a few more, and I’m sure defensive line is one of the spots that Thompson will look for in the draft.
