Packers Are Not Done At Running Back

NFL Owners Meetings are this week in Phoenix because there aren’t enough things to do in Arizona’s capital city this week. Ted Thompson of the Green Bay Packers met with the media on Monday afternoon. As many know, Thompson doesn’t really do those things, and he went on to talk about free agents along with a few other things. The biggest nugget from the whole interview was Thompson saying Packers are not done with running back. This tells me Green Bay has a few running backs in mind in the NFL Draft, and if that doesn’t work out, look at a veteran.
It’s not surprising to hear Thompson say Green Bay is not at running back position considering how deep a draft it is for the position. I would be stunned if Packers use a first-round pick on Christian McCaffrey or Dalvin Cook, yet I could see it as Packers continuing to build a bigger offense. But there’s a great deal of value with D’Onta Freeman from Texas, Oklahoma’s Semaje Perine, Clemson’s Wayne Gallman and South Florida’s Marlon Mack to name a few. What’s interesting is the backs in the middle rounds fit more what Green Bay needs right now. McCaffery and Cook would immediately help this team, but it feels like the mid-round backs might be where it’s at.
There’s the big elephant in the room if the Packers don’t draft a running back. Adrian Peterson will likely still be available. My guess is Jamaal Charles will also be out there for teams. Rumors are Peterson’s price tag is way too high at eight million, and I’m guessing it’s going to come down after the NFL Draft is over. There are a section of Packers fans that want to see Peterson in uniform along with the media who can’t control themselves about the veteran player. I’m telling you all again, he’s a big-time headcase, and I would have major concerns about him heading into the season.
We’ll see what Packers do at the highly coveted position.
