Packers OTA Observations: Corner Swag, Contracts & Culture Change

OTA’s are a fun time in the world of football. They’re a morsel of the National Football League returning to our every day conversation. Sure, we talk about football all the time. It just happens from Trump being mad at the Eagles to free agents like Dez Bryant not being on an NFL roster. OTA’s also bring the first round of the hype machine that will get churning once we hit training camp then preseason and maybe into the early part of the season. There will be guys that Packers fans get too excited about like Jeff Janis, or players that people see have bad summers then immediately cast them off as having a bad year without any facts. Let’s see what’s going on at this point.
Corner Swag for days – It appears that Aaron Rodgers took a liking to the young corners. He talked about their ‘swagger’ to the media yesterday speaking about Jaire Alexander and Josh Jackson. I’m not surprised. Alexander and Jackson play with a great flair to their game if you watch their college tapes. Jaire made an early name for himself with the team by picking off Rodgers in the end zone which is something unheard of in the regular seasons. I’m sure at OTAs you take more chances, but impressive nonetheless from Alexander.
Will Aaron Rodgers contract get done? – Like the hype machine, this story will pick up steam as we get closer to the season. Reports came out over the weekend that Rodgers wants opt-outs in his contracts. Basically, he does not want to be locked in to being a lifelong Packer and could choose to bolt at any time. Rodgers called it ‘conjecture’ yesterday. We’ll see if that’s really the case as this saga will rage on all summer.
Mike Pettine is the new boss in town – Not to shit on the Packers media, but they did a whole story on Mike Pettine yelling at the defense. Yes, you read that right. A whole 500-1000 word piece on Pettine yelling at some guys. I get it’s OTA’s but man, that’s not breaking news at all. We knew Pettine would come in and shake things up from the get-go. It’s nice that it’s starting right away. Related, it’s probably a bad look for Ha Ha Clinton-Dix not to be attending. I get that it’s optional, but with a new coach in town, you’d hope Ha Ha would be present to start the learning process.
