Packers Shouldn’t Go After Odell Beckham Jr After His Release

Odell Beckham Jr. is getting released today by the Cleveland Browns. It appears that Beckham Jr.’s contract is getting reworked, so, a team could claim him off waivers versus an outright release free for all. People are going to immediately bang down the door to get Beckham Jr. to the Packers. I’ve advocated for it as well in the past. But right now with this team, it does not make a ton of sense. Green Bay already has a full receiver room. And the role you would want Beckham Jr. to play would be similar to what you have with Randall Cobb.

Once contract is finalized – anytime in next few days – OBJ will be released, as @ProFootballTalk/ @CharlesRobinson reported.

When we all clamored for OBJ in the past, they did not have as deep of a wide receiver core. Right now with Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Allen Lazard, Cobb, they’re pretty deep. A wide receiver is not a need like it was for the Packers a couple of years ago. And why take a risk on a guy who consistently gets hurt and shows little to no production?
The waiver part is an interesting wrinkle because the Packers would be last on the list if that were the case. I have to believe there would be a team that is willing to take the risk before the Packers at 32. Beckham Jr. is a problem child without question. But there is some team that believes they have the culture to fix whatever is going on with him. Someone compared Odell to Kyrie Irving (Pre-vaccine stuff) where they are known for a few big plays, but in the last few years, they haven’t done anything special yet we give them way too much attention.
