News came out yesterday that major winner and fan favorite Phil Mickelson will not be heading to Erin Hills in a couple weeks due to his daughter’s high school graduation. This is a big blow for golf fans. Mickelson is one of the more notable names in golf, and he’s a favorite by many casual fans. He’s still chasing a U.S. Open title to complete the career grand slam. That said, there are still hundreds of storylines heading into the second major, so this really shouldn’t worry Erin Hills or U.S. Open.

The storylines in golf are some of the best in my opinion. You have Dustin Johnson defending his title and his first major of the year after hurting his back. Jordan Spieth being a one of the few who have played Erin Hills in the past. Jason Day and Rickie Fowler coming on strong in the last couple of weeks. Jon Rahm missed the cut this week, but he’s the next great one to win a major. Even Bubba Watson coming to life at The Memorial is a notable thing for Erin Hills which will play very long. There isn’t a good golfer who is really struggling right now, which makes Mickelson somewhat of an afterthought really.

He will be missed, but there will be plenty of great things to keep us occupied.
