Ted Thompson’s Legacy Is Better Than You Think

While Dom Capers getting released was not surprise, Ted Thompson leaving the general manager position did register as a surprise. It came late in the evening that Thompson would be getting a new position in the organization. This is something I mentioned last week, and things looked like they were staying status quo with Thompson making moves for Corey Linsley and Davante Adams. Little did we know those were the last moves made by the Packers general manager. Green Bay will now look to what’s next, and we should all give Thompson credit for the job he did with this organization.
Many people will shit all over the former Packers general manager, although, it’s very misguided. He did a great job since taking over in 2005. Thompson hired Mike McCarthy, he put a team together that made the playoffs nine of the 12 years and won a Super Bowl. That’s pretty damn good. Add to the fact, he had the balls to trade Brett Favre who was still in his prime and roll with Aaron Rodgers is pretty amazing. That deserves so much credit as well as drafting him with a first round pick when Green Bay needed other things at the time. Imagine if Packers traded Rodgers, where is this organization at this very moment?
Could Thompson have done some different things with the roster throughout the years? Yes, but in the long run, he did enough to keep this team prosperous. Overall, I believe Green Bay looked at the rest of the league and saw they were a bit behind of the top tier of this league. That’s why changes are being made to find ways to get back to that level. It might not take awhile for it to happen. Green Bay tends to respond pretty well after a losing season. This shouldn’t be any different. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Packers roll with Eliot Wolf or Brian Gutekunst in this role. With Thompson staying with the team, my guess is the general manager will have some connection with the Packers. Although, this same thing happened with the Brewers and Doug Melvin then the team went outside for their general manager.
Even if you didn’t agree with all of his moves, Thompson should get a tip of a cap from Packers fans.
Charlie.
