On Monday morning, Marquette Golden Eagles fans were surprised by the news that Brendan Bailey is deciding to declare himself for the NBA Draft. Bailey did not have a year that would make you think he’s ready for the NBA. But the thought is that he could go play against top players (If allowed when this all calms down), get feedback to work on his game and then get drafted the following year. Most of the time that makes some sense. But Bailey is so far off the radar from being a pro at this point. He does some nice things but nothing out of this world for the Golden Eagles.

The thing that doesn’t make sense to me is why Bailey doesn’t lean on his dad for this information? As you might know, if you’ve watched a Marquette broadcast, Thurl Bailey is Brendan’s father. He played in the NBA and works as an analyst for the Utah Jazz. You’re telling me Thurl couldn’t have given Brendan’s tapes to a few teams and gotten the feedback he wants without entering the draft process? Maybe that is not allowed, but it doesn’t feel like a crime.

Bailey will be back at Marquette. There is nothing that makes me think teams will tell him he is draftable. He had a mediocre career with the Golden Eagles thus far plus he is 23 years old. Bailey is basketball old already and hasn’t shown he can be better than people younger than him. I still believe he could be a factor for Marquette next season, but I had that same thought last year too.
