Marquette Golden Eagles have a shot. They have a legitimate shot at being the second Golden Eagles team in school history to win a Big East crown. That’s an amazing opportunity considering the history of the Big East conference, and Marquette being an original outsider when they first joined the league. Now, they’re part of the family and very proud to be part of the conference. Marquette is currently tied with Villanova for the top spot in the conference, and they currently own the tiebreaker with one game left against the Wildcats next Wednesday. ESPN Wisconsin asked ‘What would you rather have – Big East title or Big East conference tourney title. The vote was split by 50/50 yet every Marquette fan should be pining for that regular season.

I get the allure of the Big East tournament. I really do. It’s played in Madison Square Garden. The history of the tournament is rich and almost unlike any other in college basketball due staying in one location. Not to mention, the moments created in the Big East tournament like Kemba’s stepback, the 6OT game and many more. Winning that feels awesome, and there is some theory that if a team gets hot at the conference tournament, they’re a lock to be a Final Four team. That is not accurate. Teams are all over the place after winning the conference title. Some bow out early like Virginia and others like Michigan and Nova got to the final game. Regular season titles matter more.

When a recruit looks up in the rafters, he will see the ‘2018-2019 Big East champs.’ That would be the second banner up there for a season-long effort versus one week where the team got hot. A regular season title defines what type of season you had versus one week where everything worked for your team. If Marquette were not able to win the Big East, and Villanova won it again, that’s not something worth crying over spilled milk. Although, there will be a tinge of disappoinment considering how lose they could have been, but if everyone returns from this team next season besides Matt Heldt, Marquette could contend again for Big East crown.

The title opportunity starts tonight versus Butler.
