Do you remember the start of the Ty Montgomery breakout? It was the end of 2016. Green Bay started to ‘Run the table’ if you will towards the playoffs. They were in the thick of a playoff race and faced a challenging game against a pesky Chicago Bears team. Montgomery broke out with over 100 yards rushing including a massive 66 yard scamper for the score. From then on, it looked like Green Bay may have found a running back. The fantasy buzz around him the next August was unavoidable, and the overall hype grew with David Johnson comparisons. That all fizzled out as Montgomery failed to be a lead back. Montgomery grew frustrated with his limited role and ended up disrupting the locker room. Thankfully, Green Bay found a home for him in Baltimore.

Montgomery never made it as a running back. Why? I’m unsure. Did Mike McCarthy bungled the entire thing? It’s possible. If the Packers had a coach with a more innovative mind like Sean Payton, Andy Reid, Seean McVay, would we see Montgomery’s frustrations boil over to a temper tantrum that led to his Baltimore trade? The questions are everlasting with Montgomery who should have been the type of player that Green Bay in a 2018 offense, instead, he never seemed to fit with thier team. It wouldn’t surprise me if we see Ty have a big year or two elsewhere in the next couple years. Some team will take a chance on him next offseason, and it could pay off for them.

The trade signaled everything we thought about this week. Monday, we wrote about Montgomery needing to be released from the team per what Michael Silver wrote on NFL.com. Then, we had Monty play the defensive card and come out with a strong PR effort in his favor. Packers called bullshit on that and moved on smartly dealing him to Baltimore. Green Bay would not have released him this week, rather, made him inactive because they were not going risk Montgomery signing with New England.

Who takes his roster spot? We’ll find out later today likely. My guess is they would move Tra Carson on the active roster. He’s a running back on their practice squad formerly of Texas A&M and spent two years in Cincinnati prior to playing with the Packers. Trevor Davis is likely the other move for Green Bay to have a kick returner again.
