The Race to be the Next Packers Head Coach
Right now, it’s a race to get a head coach in the National Football League. There are eight open coaching spots. That’s a fourth of the league needing a new coach. Green Bay is one of those eight teams. Now, it’s the most or second-most attractive job right now with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback plus a stable front office. Some might put Cleveland ahead of Green Bay, but Jimmy Haslam hangs in the shadow like a drunk uncle. Packers have been tied to many coaches already. It’s confusing and you might feel like Charlie Kelly trying to find Pepe Silva. Let’s break down who has the best chance to be the next head coach.
The Favorite
Josh McDaniels – From everything you read, Josh McDaniels is the favorite to be the next coach for the Green Bay Packers. McDaniels and Brian Gutekunst were paired together in San Francisco, and they nearly worked together there. The relationship is established, and it appears McDaniels will be the dude. He interviews in Green Bay on Friday. There are concerns with his personality. He bolted from being the Colts coach. He handled his job at Denver horribly. But the guy can fucking coach. Patriots have been routinely a top team in offensive DVOA. They were 7th this year with a breaking down Tom Brady and no Rob Gronkowski. Consider that, Packers fans. Another slight issue with McDaniels is he might not start working in Green Bay until February 4th meaning everything else gets put on hold until then.
The Intriguing candidate
Matt LaFleur – If you followed along, this is my guy. He worked under Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay in his young coaching career. He is the Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator at the moment, and the Packers requested a chance to interview him. They’ll be granted that request as reports say he’ll interview on Sunday. He is a supreme talent, and a future great coach in my opinion. He did a great job scheming an offense last week with Blaine Gabbert as quarterback. Imagine what he could do with Aaron Rodgers?
No contact has been made but fans would be all-in
Adam Gase – With the Dolphins firing Adam Gase, he is getting interviews all over the place for next season. Gase has a chance to be Pete Carroll where he bounces back at his next job with the right management in place. Arizona is the first place to interview him. Right now, that is the only place. Denver will not be on his list, so, that’s one less team to go up against for his services.
Vic Fangio – Again, he is a big name that many Packers fans have interest in but no contact made yet. Fangio will be interviewing with the Miami Dolphins and Denver at this time. Like McDaniels, the problem is Packers would have to wait for his services until Chicago is done with the playoffs. Fangio might become more attractive to teams if Chicago gets knocked out on Sunday.
Quit badgerin’ me, alright?
Pat Fitzgerald – All sorts of rumors tied Pat Fitzgerald to the Green Bay job. Mark Murphy was his Athletic Director who hired him, and there are multiple Northwestern alums on the Packers roster. Fitzgerald has been adamant he is staying with Northwestern. Fitz is a good dude, but I’ll say this, Nick Saban said the same shit about Miami.
Okay, I guess
Brian Flores – Another New England guy, he’s never been a defensive coordinator. Name your favorite Patriots defensive coach that has done well as a head coach.
Dan Campbell – He will be interviewing Saturday. I honestly think he would be a disaster with Aaron Rodgers. Hope this is just to find out about the culture of New Orleans
Mike Munchak – This feels polish for McCarthy. Rodgers love linemen, but a lineman who is a Hall of Famer will likely want to run the ball a ton. No thanks.
We’ll see how this race all shapes out.
Charlie.
