Three things from the Travelers Championship

When I saw the list of golfers playing over the weekend at the Travelers Championship, it surprised me. Most of the time we get a weak field after playing in a major. That did not happen with the likes of Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day all playing the tournament. But Bubba Watson emerged with a blistering 63 on Sunday to win the tournament.
Bubba’s great season continues on – I’m not a Bubba guy, but I can marvel at what he’s done this season. Three wins this season is the best in golf. Watson is probably the most improved golfer after a horrendous 2017. Some might hate on the fact that he isn’t built for most courses and only takes advantage of the ones that work for him, yet, he’s still getting it done on the course. It appears like he will be on the Ryder Cup team, and it would not surprise me to see him in contention at one of the last two majors.
Spieth can’t carry Thursday’s momentum with him – Good to see Jordan Spieth start off strong on Thursday with a round of 63, but he could not keep it up. Spieth finished four under and was three over the rest of the tournament. For Spieth’s confidence, it’s good to have one strong round under his belt, but he’s again nowhere near contention. You wonder if he’s going to pull himself out of this funk. Something certainly needs to change for him. I’m sure the competitiveness in him is fed up with the way he’s been playing over the last few months.
Is Bryson DeChambeau going to be on the Ryder Cup team? – As the summer goes on, we will start to look at the Ryder Cup team. The one interesting name in the mix is Bryson DeChambeau. I’m not sure what his popularity is with the players, and a Ryder Cup team with Patrick Reed plus him could melt France. He’s currently in eighth place as he continues to play good golf with one win this season. Hilarious that the PGA may look into him using a compass on the course which he did over the weekend.

Tiger Woods will be back in action for his tournament this week at the Quicken Loans National. The course last year was not an easy one as Kyle Stanley won the tournament in a playoff with Charles Howell III at seven under. Rickie Fowler and Marc Leishman will also be participating in this tournament. Not as strong as a field as you’d think for Tiger’s tourney, but that might be the opportunity Woods needs for his first win.
