Three Things We Learned From Golf This Weekend

What’s going on, y’all? We had a great golf weekend. Even though the Quicken Loans National featured few stars, we had a major breakthrough with Francesco Molinari owning the course and owning Sunday with a 62 to completely separate himself from the rest of the field. Alexander Noren won the European Tour event that was hosted at this year’s Ryder Cup location. If anything, we saw why people should not be entirely confident that the United States will rout Europe again in the Ryder Cup.
Tiger Woods continue to play strong golf – This is another good step forward for Tiger Woods. Sure, he did not win the tournament, but he played well enough to win on Sunday. I don’t think anyone would catch Molinari, but Woods should be encouraged by his performance. Tiger will move on to the Open Championship. I’m unsure if he’s going to play the Scottish Open as a tune-up prior to the event which a lot of golfers have done recently. Woods has two top 15 finishes at Carnoustie where the Open is held this year. Woods will likely have that advantage over most of the field given they haven’t played an Open Championship there since 2007.
Molinari breaks through on the PGA Tour – Francesco Molinari is one of the better golfers in the world. But not many people who are causal golf fans know this about him. Molinari is having a great European Tour season, and if you remember, he contended for last year’s PGA Championship. He is definitely a contender for the Open and PGA Championship in the coming weeks. He’s also going to be a bitch to deal with when the Ryder Cup rolls around in September.
Justin Thomas versus Barstool – If you guys follow me on Twitter, you know I’m a pretty big Barstool guy. Hell, I’m wearing a ‘Sorrey’ t-shirt as I write this blog, but they were so offbase with their Justin Thomas slander. An article was written about how according to Barstool said ‘European fans are better than Americans and around the Fourth of July no less.’ That’s such fucking bullshit. If you watch what JT says, he speaks to French fans knowing the small, nuanced things about golf compared to Americans. For Barstool to go after him again is a dumb move. Thomas is one of the more popular guys on the tour being tight with guys like Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and a few others. It’s highly unlikely Thomas will speak positively of Barstool, and that might affect some of the guys the Stool can pull in.
Next up – The Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia takes place over the Fourth of July holiday. Phil Mickelson decided at the last minute that he’s going to play which makes sense since he shills for being a member of this course. Other than that, there’s only a few notable names like Bubba Watson, Jimmy Walker, Tony Finau and that’s about it.
Charlie.
