Thumbs Up to the PGA Tour Schedule Changes

PGA Tour announced this morning that they will be revamping their schedule for the 2018-2019 season. The PGA Tour is looking for a facelift as they probably are spread out to thin to almost have a full year of golf. The new schedule will try to avoid some of that. The PGA will take a break in September versus featuring the FedEx Playoffs while NFL and College Football are just beginning. That’s a huge move by the PGA Tour and a welcomed one. Hopefully, the players will agree this has some value to them. Couple of quick takes…
Will Wisconsin get a BMW Championship? – Serious question here with the expansive golf scene in Wisconsin, it feels like the BMW Championship could be the ideal opportunity to bring some great golfers to the state. The attendance is always good at major events like the U.S. Open at Erin Hills and the two PGA Championship’s at Whistling Straits. With Detroit and Minnesota both getting new PGA Tour spots plus a visit to Illinois for the BMW Championships, it would be great to see Wisconsin get representation as well.
The risk of the PGA CHampionship in May – I do think it’s smart to play the PGA Championship in May. You’re in the full swing of golf. There isn’t this weird layoff between the Open Championship and the PGA. You avoid running into any Olympics hassle, but you’re taking a gamble on the weather pending location. This year is in New York at Bethpage Black. Upstate New York in mid-May could be beautiful, but it also could be horrid weather.
Byron Nelson & Valspar got the biggest shaft – Not everyone will be winners, so, if you had to pick a couple that got screwed in this new format, it’s the Byron Nelson and Valspar tournaments. Byron Nelson moved to a course that wasn’t popular with players, and now it’s being played a week before a major. Not great. Valspar has been a deep field, and now it’s a week after the Players Championship then Match Play follows their tournament. That’s a hell of a sandwich.
All in all, good job PGA.
Charlie.
