Tyler Herro Decommits From Wisconsin

In a surprising move, four-star in-state recruit Tyler Herro decommitted from Wisconsin and opened up his recruitment again for his senior season. Apparently, this is a rumor that’s been out there for awhile in the summer AAU season, but nothing came of it at that time. Yet a month before the recruiting period ends for 2018 recruits, Herro makes his choice to not to go to Wisconsin to the furor of Badgers fans who were mad online tonight. Whether he made the right move or not remains to be seen, but things are starting to get a little concerning in the recruiting world for Wisconsin.
Herro seemed like a player that would be a day one starter for Wisconsin next season. He would add depth to a young and growing team that will begin that process this season. Herro developed greatly over the summer, and the hype became real about him. As noted, there were rumors about him wanting to leave the program this summer. To me, I have to be believe he was hellbent on leaving because Wisconsin likely rolled out the red carpet giving him carte blanche, and at the end of the day, he saw it fit to test the waters again. Marquette recruited Herro, but they do not appear to be a part of the picture. North Carolina, Kentucky, Arizona and Kansas. Those are four elite-level places that Wisconsin or Marquette can’t stack up against.
With Joey Hauser going to Marquette and Herro leaving, Wisconsin missed out on the top two recruits in the state yet again. They’re one for their last eight. Now, there are situations where the fit isn’t right, but the big name in-state recruits are not choosing Wisconsin besides Kobe King. This is a trend that needs to change for Wisconsin. You cannot keep letting these in-state talents get out of your system. I know that Greg Gard and company does great work around the Midwest for talent, but the fact remains if you show that your state is vulnerable, anyone will try to poach those guys.
This is a blow to Wisconsin and its ego. It would be for any college team to have a player make this decision so close to signing day. Badgers will have to do their best to find someone who could be a Herro-like addition, but that’s unlikely to happen.
Charlie.
