Why Packers Fans Shouldn’t Overreact To C.J. Spiller In Seattle

Last night, a story broke that C.J. Spiller, former first-round pick and last played at New Orleans, will be joining the Seattle Seahawks. This drew the ire of Packers fans as Spiller came to Green Bay for a workout last week, and Packers decided to pass on him. That’s okay for Ted Thompson to do, but now if Spiller does anything remotely productive, people will bring their pitchforks out to Ted Thompson. It’s the Internet Packer Fan way truly, but let’s pump the brakes on this whole thing.
Spiller hasn’t been productive in three years. 2012 was his best year with 1,244 rushing yards and 456 receiving yards. Since then, he had a decent 2013 in Buffalo, but the last two years in Buffalo and New Orleans afterwards were a disaster for him. This is obviously puzzling given the Saints have a top flight offense, and Spiller couldn’t find a way to be productive. Additionally, he had trouble staying on the field. Spiller only played in nine games last season, a career low for him.
Maybe Spiller captures magic playing for Seattle, but there’s no guarantee. John Schneider likes to take some these chances, and Ted Thompson does not. Once you realize this is Thompson’s style, the better off you’ll be.
