Will Brewers Be Able to Finally Solve Quintana

If you’re a kid from the 90’s, you probably remember the movie ‘Little Giants.’ The kids football movie with the annexation of Puerto Rico. At halftime of the big game against the Ed O’Neil-led Dallas Cowboys, Rick Moranis gives a halftime speech about ‘One time.’ All the kids give their examples including a favorite… ‘Roger chickened out! HE’S A MARINE!’ to get the kids to believe they can win this game. They do because it’s a Disney movie. Sports in real life isn’t always like that. Brewers may have got their ‘one-time’ win over Jose Quintana in August, but they’re hoping for another one on Monday afternoon. Can Brewers figure out the pitcher that has plagued them the most in the last two years?
No one has owned the Brewers quite like Quintana. I’m waiting for a Brewers player to pull a Pedro Martinez and call Quintana ‘their daddy.’ Quintana holds a 4.13 ERA and a WAR of 1.9 which is the fourth-lowest in Cubs starters yet he’s a Cy Young MVP candidate whenever he faces Milwaukee. It’s fucking incredible. In six games this year, the Cubs lefty carries a 2.17 ERA with only nine runs allowed and 33 strikeouts. Quintana does not have more than 20 strikeouts against any other team in baseball. The guy is filthy versus Milwaukee. Can the team go with ‘two times’ and beat him up on Monday afternoon?
Milwaukee is the hottest they’ve been all season at this moment in time. They went 19-7 in the month of September. They’re on a seven-game winning streak and their offense is on complete fire scoring five of more runs in seven of their last nine games. Ryan Braun hit two homers over Quintana in August, and Braun is the hottest hitter on the team not named Christian Yelich. Mike Moustakas has three homers versus the Cubs’ Brewers ace from their meetings when Moose played in Kansas City. Hernan Perez might be a sneaky underrated hero of this game as he hit him pretty well as well at a .320 clip. Expect him to start over Orlando Arica today.
Brewers knew it wouldn’t be easy. It’s an accomplishment in their own right that they caught Chicago at the end of the year. This team trailed Chicago by six games on August 28th and turned it on from there to make this a thing on a Monday afternoon. No matter what happens today, I love this team and believe they can win it all.
