Milwaukee Brewers know something about their catcher. They know the last couple years have been decent, but there’s room for improvement. Erik Kratz became a folk hero, and Manny Pina has been fun as hell to cheer for yet the team needs to improve this area. Look no further than this free agent class that is loaded with catching talent. Brewers reportedly visited with Wilson Ramos, the former Tampa Bay and Philadelphia catcher from last season. He would give the Brewers significantly more offense from the catcher position, but there’s a massive injury risk that comes along with him.

Ramos is a hell of a hitter. He had more than 10 home runs in almost every one of his seasons as a big leaguer, and he is known to mash the left-handed pitchers. Lefty pitcher were a bugaboo for Milwaukee last season, so, Ramos immediately helps them there. He hits for average too. Ramos spent most of his career above the .265 range and could easily be slotted in as the sixth hitter in the lineup. The offensive skills of the Venzuelan catcher make the Brewers and other teams perusing him drool leading to a deal yet there are problems that loom with him.

Ramos cannot stay healthy. The injuries he faced already in this career makes you wonder if his body will break down with the next big issue. Ramos seems to always find injuries. During his time at Washington, Ramos had two ACL tears, hamstring pull that hampered all season one year and a broken hand. The ACL tears stand out as a catcher. He is 32 years old and you wonder how long can his body do this? It’s a little bit of an issue especially considering Ramos is not a lock to play 100 games in the season. He carries a ton of risk with his injury issues plus maintaining his knees at the catcher position.

We’ll see if the Brewers make a move on Ramos. Other teams will likely give him more money, and honestly, I think he’ll only worth a two year deal considering his injury issues.
