Wishing You A Happy Tiger Woods Day

Tiger Woods is set to tee off here as we publish with Justin Thomas at the Hero World Challenge. This is Tiger’s event in the Bahamas where 18 golfers play in a tournament that benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation. The greatest golfer of our generation announced that he’s going to be back for this tournament to launch his 2017-2018 campaign. Woods has been out for quite some time with a back injury, and the excitement has been building with his play in the last few weeks.
People don’t want to get sucked into another Tiger comeback. This is third time where we’ve seen Woods back in action, but to me, this is the perfect time for him to be back in golf. In a way, there is way less pressure than a few years ago because golf grew without him. Justin Thomas, his playing partner, is a notable face in the game. Same goes for Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka. All of those guys elevated their game without Woods being around, so, the pressure could be off the once-great golfer. We’ll see with his play today and throughout the weekend.
Regardless of how he plays, we’ll overreact to it. Woods is the barometer for golf hot takes. I don’t think Brad Faxon, Patrick Reed or Fowler did him any favors by saying all of the complimentary things about Tiger. All made it seem like Woods returned to form and is playing great golf. While that might be true, it does add an element of a letdown from his fan base whose yearning to return to the glory years. Still, I don’t think that bothers him. People hyped up Tiger for his whole career, what’s changed this time around.
As I mentioned in the last post, this is an amazing weekend for sports. Couple big NFL games, you have Championship Saturday, both local college basketball teams have big games plus you have Tiger back in your lives. Nothing better than having a few cold ones and watching from your couch this weekend.
