Set Your Expectations Low With Herb Waters

Green Bay Packers announced yesterday they would be calling up Herb Waters from the practice. The name might sound familiar if you followed along his story in training camp and early on in the season how Green Bay converted him to a cornerback. Waters gets called up on the biggest stage of the season although it wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up not playing much and just a body for Mike McCarthy in the defensive backfield for practice.
Let’s assume Quinten Rollins is out with a concussion. Packers will probably roll out Damarious Randall and Ladarius Gunter on the outside with Micah Hyde playing the slot with coverage from Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Morgan Burnett. That sounds right to me. Don’t think Green Bay will shadow any of their corners with Odell Beckham Jr. Josh Hawkins will probably get the active tag, and Waters could be inactive. But with all Packers injuries in the secondary, maybe Waters gets added for special teams purposes or to have another body? NFL keeps their rosters at 53 for the playoffs, but that’s a rule change we could see happening this summer.
As I noted on Twitter last night, you want to dance with 2010 storyline even though this team is far different from that one, it would be Waters having a big day at corner. This would be more unexpected that James Starks rushing for over 100 yards against Philadelphia. We’ll see what Dom Capers decides to do with his secondary because he had a beat up version facing this same team in Week 5 and handled all of their receivers just fine.
Not sure what Green Bay does if another corner goes down.
