Three Things We Learned From NFL Week 1
Overreaction Monday is here folks! The first Monday of the NFL season where everyone reacts to a small sample size. Philly radio have probably named Carson Wentz the second coming of Christ. Detroit radio thinks the Lions may have a shot at the playoffs this season and all else in between. There are some learnings though that we can gather from week one and see what could be on the horizon.
New England is a machine
All week, I told people to take New England plus the six points. I think I picked on the site, but when the Gronk news broke on Friday night, I went back on my word. I ended up with Arizona and a broken heart. I had this pegged for the last two weeks and couldn’t trust the Pats without Gronk and two offensive linemen. Bill Belichick came into Arizona and played their brand of football with the Cardinals doing nothing to stop them. Patriots sent out a warning to the rest of the league that it doesn’t matter who’s at quarterback, they can beat anyone. Jimmy Garoppolo keeps this up and he will get a fortune.
Jameis Winston looked like a new man
Loved what I saw from Jameis Winston on Sunday. He’s not the rookie quarterback we saw last season. He had the Falcons defense on their heels all game long. Winston threw for 281 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. Jameis seems to have a better understanding of defenses compared to last season. He’s much more in control of his body and making smart decisions. We’ll see how things go in the next four games as Winston takes on Arizona, Los Angeles, Denver and Carolina. Four of the best defenses in the league.
Big comebacks and big balls
Not to be a cliche writer, but in today’s NFL, no lead is safe. Chargers, Saints and Lions all had commanding leads on their respective opponents whom all came back to take the lead. Only Detroit was able to escape with a victory. Chargers couldn’t get any offense together in the second half with Kansas City marching back to win in overtime. Raiders had a big 75-yard run spark the comeback then Jack Del Rio took out his nuts and laid them on the table for a two-point conversion that would ultimately win them the game. Thankfully for the Lions, the Colts defense is a hot mess like me at an open bar wedding.
