BrewCap: Bullpen Falls Apart Again For Milwaukee
It’s crazy to think Milwaukee Brewers could be 8-1 on this road trip. That’s amazing to think about truly given how people perceived this team to start the season. After a 55-minute rain delay, Brewers and Cubs got underway for the final game of their series. Once again, Milwaukee jumped out to a lead being up 4-1 early on. But the bullpen once again failed to hold up the lead as Milwaukee falters giving up 6 runs in the final three innings of the game. This one stings as Cubs add four in the ninth to win it.
Player of the Game: Jacob Barnes (P) (Brewers) – There are others who could have this honor, but let’s ride with Barnes who struck out the side again in his inning of work today. This is the second time this series Barnes stuck out the side. He threw 15 strikes on 20 pitches in the inning. It’s one blown save, and those are going to happen yet I can make a real case that Barnes could be the closer for this team before the year is over. He has the stuff to do it.
(Not) Player of the Game: Neftali Feliz (P) (Brewers) – It’s bullpen party today. And trust me, Carlos Torres could have easily gotten this one today. Feliz had some issues. First, he walks John Jay which was an ominous way to start the inning after getting one out. After seeing Miguel Montero is trying to hit one to the moon, Feliz should have never given him a good pitch again yet he did. Then Addison Russell crushed a grooved ball center-in to send Cubs fans home happy.
Player of the Game: Addison Russell (SS) (Cubs) – I’m starting to look over his resume for the Brewers Killer club because Russell keeps finding ways to be a player against the Crew. He had the big three-run shot to end it, but Russell also added an RBI single in the 8th inning to pull Chicago within one. He’s looking like an All-Star to begin the season.
Positive: Still a good road trip – Sure these last two games sucked, but Brewers played really well over these last nine games. They had a lead in every game of this road trip. That’s fucking incredible. That’s also what good teams do. We’ll see how the home life treats them. We’ve seen Brewers teams throughout the years that are very reverse in that they can’t win at Miller Park. Three bad teams come to town over the next 10, let’s see if they can make it happen.
Negative: Untimely walks are a killer – What’s crazy to me is Brewers pitchers have only walked seven batters in the last two games. That’s not bad. But when you look how Cubs scoring innings started happened to be when walks were involved, you pull your hair out. Milwaukee doesn’t have a walk problem with their pitchers, but they need to figure out how to avoid letting those walks turn into runs.
Next up: St. Louis Cardinals come to town. That’s always a tricky thing, but Cards haven’t been very good to begin the year. Cards are 6-9 with a 1-5 road record to open up 2017. Carlos Martinez takes the ball tomorrow, and he’s been a killer against Brewers especially at Miller Park. In the last three years, he’s pitched nine times at The Keg starting six of them with a 1.51 ERA and 58 strikeouts with only one home run allowed. Zach Davies attempts to get right as Brewers pitcher continued to struggle in Cincinnati. Good news for him are Cards bats aren’t piping hot heading into this one amid a sweep of Pittsburgh as they only scored six runs total.
