BrewCap: Garza & Peralta Remain Sores on Brewers’ Year
At some point, Milwaukee Brewers are going to realize that if they are going to keep winning baseball games, they need to let go of Wily Peralta and Matt Garza. The first one is easier than the other one, but still, both players are bringing absolutely zero to the team at this current point. Both played a role in Brewers ugly 8-1 home loss by Pittsburgh on Monday night.
Player of the Game: Paolo Espino (Brewers) – As a long reliever, Brewers saw a nice outing from Espino who worked nearly three innings with one strikeout and no hits allowed. I’m not saying he should be part of the regular bullpen, but Craig Counsell needs to consider shorter hooks for guys like Garza when Espino is clearly capable to righting the ship.
(Not) Player of the Game: Wily Peralta (Brewers) – My guess we are going to see a roster move be made tomorrow if it makes sense. The time has come for Peralta. He’s insanely talented, but there’s not much happening at this point. Let him go and find a team that might be able to fix him. It’s useless for Brewers side of things.
Player of the Game: Gerrit Cole (Pirates) – Not his very best stuff, but Cole still pitched pretty well for Pittsburgh in this one. Cole worked seven innings with only three hits allowed, a walk and five strikeouts. It’s Cole’s best outing in a few games as he made one mistake to Travis Shaw.
Positive: Another night of bullpen rest – Good news, Corey Knebel and Jacob Barners received another night off from the bullpen work. That’s key for Milwaukee to get these guys some time off, even if this isn’t the type of game you want them Milwaukee to playing, it’s good to have the back end bullpen have another easy night.
Negative: Love home runs, but you have to cash in – The dangerous things about getting your last 16 runs on home runs is everyone starts looking for the home run. While that’s all fine and dandy, they need to cash in when there are opportunities. Brewers couldn’t convert one runner in scoring position amid having nine of them there.
Next up: Brewers will send Zach Davies to the mound who had a great outing against Pittsburgh earlier this year. Pirates will trot out Chad Kuhl who gives it up to left-handers so we could see another big night from Eric Thames, Travis Shaw and others.
