BrewCap: Gonzalez Keeps Phillies’ Bats Quiet
Gio Gonzalez played a role in helping the Brewers get over the hump in the final month of the season. People were unsure about Gio after a rough 2018 campaign with Washington, but he pitched great for the Crew. They decided to not bring him back due to the influx of young pitching ready to roll for Milwaukee. When that young pitching fell apart and Gonzalez couldn’t latch on with the Yankees, he became the obvious fit for the team. He has been great since being back with the Brewers. He had another strong performance resulting in a 5-2 Brewers victory.
Player of the Game: Gio Gonzalez – As mentioned, he pitched well against the Phillies. He made one mistake in the first inning to Jean Segura, but other than, he pitched really well. He went nearly six innings giving up that lone run and scattering seven hits whilst striking out three batters. Gonzalez has not allowed more than two runs in each of his four starts this season.
Honorable Mention: Jesus Aguilar – We still haven’t seen top-notch Zeus, but it is nice to see him deliver when the Brewers had multiple runners on in the third inning. Aguilar had the bases loaded with one out and came through with a single up the middle to score two Brewers. It was Aggie’s only hit of the night, but it is one that matters.
The Thing I liked: Owning Jake Arrieta is fun – Brewers have his number. Whether they figured something out about him after his time in Chicago, or he is just not the same pitcher anymore, the Brewers team knows how to hit him. They jumped him twice last season, and this year was no different getting him for four runs in the first three innings. Milwaukee had the advantage all game long.
The Thing I didn’t like: Too many runners left on yet again… – I feel like a broken record and the easy way out when talking about this stuff yet it keeps happening with this team. The Crew went 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position last night. That’s tough. To have that many opportunities and only convert three times is not a good look.
Next up: The battle of Zachs end the four-game series with the Brewers-Phillies. Zach Davies goes for the Crew this afternoon while the Phillies send Zach Eflin to the mound. Both have been stellar this season. Davies did not face Philadelphia last year, and Eflin saw the Crew twice which were both victories for Philadelphia.
