BrewCap: Roster Cracks Are Beginning to Show
Milwaukee Brewers roster has taken an interesting shape. It’s not the one I think people expected it to be when the season started, but it’s not one that’s a bad team which many expected. That said, this roster has too many mediocre baseball players on it. They have guys who are good every now and again, but they cannot provide consistent production. Brewers need to start looking to solve this problem, or they’ll keep losing games like tonight’s in 12 to Mets, 6-5.
Players of the Game: Corey Knebel/Jacob Barnes: Both pitchers were masterful tonight in the bullpen. Barnes and Knebel are looking like Milwaukee’s eighth and ninth inning pitchers. It appears Barnes found his mojo again. Knebel continues to be impressive with 1.3 innings of strong work where he struck out the side in the 10th inning. Both ensured that Milwaukee stayed tied up in this one.
(Not) Player of the Game: Batters with RISP – Death, taxes and Brewers not being able to score with runners in scoring position. They were 2-for-14 in this game with Travis Shaw, Hernan Perez and Domingo Santana being the worst offenders. Brewers had every opportunity to win this game, and they didn’t take advantage. This one will sting.
(Not) Player of the Game: Asdrubal Cabrera – Actually, this is a weird game for Cabrera because he went 3-for-5 driving in a run and made a fantastic defensive play in the top half of the 12th inning. Yet he had an unforgivable error that allowed two Brewers runs to score. The only reason we want 12 was due to him.

Positive: we’re not talking about Orlando Arcia enough – Brewers shortstop is starting to become a big leauger out there. Arica currently has a 10-game hitting streak going from the eight hole, and he’s making his case as to why he deserves to be higher up in the order. He finished with three hits tonight raising his average to .253 on the season. Arcia continues to develop into a great opposite field hitter and first pitch swinger. I love it.
Negative: Roster problems all over the place – We talk more about this on tomorrow’s podcast, but Eric Thames’ leg issue is directly correlated to Brewers inability to have a stable of outfielders. They’re carrying this mangled roster when they have all sorts of guys hitting the fucking cover off the ball in Triple A. It’s time to start seeing what some of those guys can do, and how they’ll help this team. Nick Franklin doesn’t belong. Same for parts of the bullpen. Let’s fix it before it’s too late.
Next up: Things aren’t going to get easier for Brewers in the coming days. This is part of the reason why tonight’s win hurts so much. Jacob deGrom goes for New York. He’s amazing for his career at home. It’s rare to see a team touch him up at Citi Field. Junior Guerra goes for Milwaukee. He looked very good against Arizona, and Guerra has been nasty against lefties which helps versus New York.
