BrewCap: The Rain Delay Comeback

Milwaukee Brewers entered the series against St. Louis with a few things in mind – Guarantee themselves a spot in the playoffs, try to separate themselves so they’re playing at home and maybe make one final push at the Chicago Cubs. On Monday, they were able to check those boxes with a 6-4 win where they came back in the seventh inning then added runs in the subsequent innings for a 6-4 victory. Brewers are now 1.5 games back of Chicago for the division lead and back to a three game lead on the Wild Card. Things are looking up for the Crew.
Player of the Game: Freddy Peralta – How about this moment for young Fred? Milwaukee uses an opener for Matt Carpenter then Peralta comes in to pitch four innings for the Brewers. He did not get the win, but he did fine in a major moment for the Brewers. He struck out three and gave up three hits including a run. Peralta did not walk a better. We likely will not see Peralta until Saturday where we’ll see if Craig Counsell uses another bullpen game this weekend
Silver Star: Lorenzo Cain – Another big night for Cain. He had three hits with a run scored as the leadoff man for the Brewers tonight. Cain continues to produce in big moments for the team. The single in the ninth proved to be the start of an insurance run for the Crew as Christian Yelich drove in Cain with an RBI double. Not to exaggerate but Cain may be the best leadoff hitter in baseball.
Honorable Mention: Corey Knebel – We’ve talked about how important Corey Knebel is to the September success of this team? None of us expected him to get another shot to close, but that happened on Monday night. Knebel closed down the game with three strikeouts including one against Matt Carpenter to end the ballgame. Good for Corey, and hopefully JJ is alright.
Next up: Brewers try to get four games up on St. Louis as they face Austin Gomber. The left-hander is a little worse at home, but he’s a good pitcher. He faced Milwaukee once this year, but it was in a relief role. Brewers send Gio Gonzalez to the hill. This is arguably the toughest start for Gio during his time with Milwaukee. St. Louis is very tough against lefties.
