BrewCap Weekend: Brewers Continue Bucco Dominance
For the Milwaukee Brewers, the matchup with the Pittsburgh Pirates is always interesting. Sometimes, the season series is very close between the two teams. Other times, Brewers flexed their muscles and won everything in sight. Until the last couple of years, the Brewers owned Pittsburgh when they came to Miller Park. The stats were off the charts. Now, things had come down to earth a little bit until this year. Brewers swept the Pirates and they’ve won six of the first seven games against Pittsburgh this season. That’s one way to impose your will on a team.
Sunday: Brewers 5 Pirates 2
In a piece that I hope to do for tomorrow, Brewers are making themselves one of the most dangerous teams in baseball, because they have two left-handers – Christian Yelich and Mike Moustakas who can both homer off left-handers just as well as they can right-handers. It’s a beautiful thing to see. Both Yelich and Moose took Pittsburgh’s lefties deep resulting in a win. Shouts to Chase Anderson too who gave up one homer, but kept Pittsburgh at two to give Milwaukee a chance.
Saturday: Brewers 5 Pirates 3
Maybe, it’s just me, but it’s been a while since the bullpen had a great game. Zach Davies did win the game and he is now 7-0 on the season with a 2.41 ERA making a case for an All-Star spot. But the bullpen held it down for the remaining four innings with scoreless work from Alex Claudio, Junior Guerra, Jeremy Jeffress, and Josh Hader. Manny Pina provided a pinch-hit home run to give the Brewers a bit of breathing room, although, Hader didn’t need it as he struck out the side.
Friday: Brewers 10 Pirates 4
Offenses were cooking early on in this game as six runs were scored in the first four innings. Brandon Woodruff did give up a few runs in his outing, but he struck out 10 batters which tie his career-high. In his last three starts, Woody had 25 strikeouts. Brewers received a ton of offense on Friday night with Eric Thames and Ryan Braun both going yard. Braun broke the game open with a three-run shot to put the Brewers up five and it included an epic bat flip that we’ll talk about all year.
Next up: Brewers face one of their hardest tasks of the season as they head to Houston to play the Astros. They’re likely the AL favorites right now as they’re dominant on both the mound and at the plate. They’ve battled through some injuries, but all of their guys know, it’s next man up. Brewers will send Freddy Peralta to the hill which gives me anxiety already and it’s not even Tuesday.
