It is hard to admit you were wrong. No one is good at it. Some people are better with words and realizing when they screwed up that it softens the blow. Others are the worst, and they stick with their feet in the mud refusing to believe their opinion is off. Many people on Brewers’ internet world believed the Brewers did not do enough this offseason. And they have been hypercritical of the lack of moves and the motives of this team. This is all before Christian Yelich signed an extension to be here for the next nine years. No one saw this move coming except for likely the Brewers hence why the offseason turned out the way it did.

There is a reason why David Stearns built up enough trust with the fans to have the phrase ‘In Stearns We Trust.’ That went away this offseason when Brewers decided not to re-sign Yasmani Grandal or Mike Moustakas. People were pissed and could not fathom the Brewers cutting payroll. They were a successful team that brought in revenue upon revenue how could they be scaling back? Well, one reason could be they knew there was a chance they could be adding Yelich to the books if things worked out.

Who knows if the conversations took place before free agency or after things went south with Grandal and Moustakas. Maybe a question was posed if there would be interest to know how hard they needed to push for both players. We will never truly know, but with this major Yelich deal, it makes more sense with what the Brewers did this offseason, right? The decision to cut payroll isn’t an easy one. But things are rosier when you sign the franchise player for life. That is an accomplishment. It is a fair deal for both sides.

For whatever it’s worth, I’m in that category too. Not getting Moustakas after missing Grandal bothered me too. But even when writing about it, I wondered if Brewers hit their ceiling with this version of their roster. David Stearns wanted to try something else out. Obviously, it never connected that they could be working on a Yelich deal. Once the roster was set by the end of January, I came around on the idea. Call me an optimist or call me someone who trusts a team with a good track record, take your pick.

Will these Brewers fans come around to the idea that this all worked out for the best? Probably not. The clowns on national sports radio, television have taught us to stand our ground. That’s okay! But realize the first question anyone will ask you will be ‘Could they have done the Yelich extension with signing Yaz or Moose?’ Good luck with your answer.
