Could Brewers & Bucks Start Their Own Network?

On Thursday, YouTubeTV announced that it will no longer be carrying FOX Sports Wisconsin. FOX Sports Wisconsin isn’t the only regional sports network they will be dropping. All of the RSN’s under the Sinclair umbrella will cease to exist on YouTubeTV. Cord cutters that are sports fans are stuck with one option, HuluLive. Other than that, it is cable or nothing if you want to watch your teams. That is unfair and a classic example of why networks are extremely out of touch with today’s environment. Is it possible that Brewers and Bucks could cut out Sinclair all together? It is unlikely unless they get some significant help.
The State of Wisconsin isn’t that big. And even though we have sports fans everywhere, not everyone is a sports fan. As someone who worked at a company that didn’t realize this when marketing, the well dries up pretty quickly. That said, live sports always do numbers. With the success of the Bucks and the recent success of the Brewers, this network would pull in ratings and sell ads when games were on. But what happens when the team isn’t playing? That’s the big question. Also, how would it affect your budget as a franchise? Sure, it could create a windfall, but it also could lead to being further in the red.
If this would become a reality, the Milwaukee sports teams would need support from a few key players. One is a local affiliate all over the state. That is complicated. They would have to work with the team to place their games on special nights where popular programming like ABC’s The Bachelor, NBC’s The Voice, or FOX’s Masked Singer isn’t running on that night. With baseball, it is pretty easy with the dead summer months. With basketball, it’s very hard. Adding to the difficult equation, some of these affiliates are owned by Sinclair.
The other thing that could make this very real is if this network would get support from the Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers, and Marquette Golden Eagles. If they could acquire all of the sports teams in Wisconsin versus just the two Milwaukee professional teams, that creates revenue and content. Live sports for each are available with Packers preseason games and Badgers & Golden Eagles sports that aren’t the major ones. Trust me when I say, Packers fans would watch loads of content about their team throughout the day. But when you add more voices, more opinions come up and more money needs to be shifted.
With all of the things thrown in, it is unlikely that the Milwaukee teams will team up together. But if they do, cord-cutters and cable users would be thrilled.
