Five-Star Patrick Baldwin Jr’s Top 10 Schools Isn’t Typical

Milwaukee area high school basketball is pumping out five-star talent. After Jalen Johnson of Nicolet chose Duke last year, Baldwin Jr is the next up to make his choice. He is a likely McDonald’s All-American and considered one of the best recruits in 2021. It does not appear Baldwin will look towards the G League to play basketball. Instead, he will go to college. Baldwin Jr’s choices are not typical for a five-star recruit, and he is giving his dad a chance to bring him to UW-Milwaukee. That isn’t the only interesting choice on the top 10 list. Baldwin Jr doesn’t seem to care about status.

Things do not usually get serious for players until the top five. Still, there are two teams here, UW-Milwaukee and Northwestern, that usually do not get a shot with five-star basketball players. Baldwin Jr.’s dad, Pat, coached at both schools. This could be the five-star recruit making a nice gesture with his top 10, or it could be legit. Remember, Ray McCallum Jr. was a five-star recruit who ended up at Detroit Mercy to play with his father versus going to a big-time school. He spurned Florida, UCLA, and Arizona to play with his dad. If UW-Milwaukee makes his top-five, that would start making things very real.
Wisconsin is also on Baldwin Jr.’s list. This would be a crowning achievement for Greg Gard. The Badgers coach has been a beast in recruiting over the last two years, and if he got Baldwin Jr., that is the exclamation point on the job he has done. The typical teams are there in the highly touted recruit’s list such as North Carolina, Duke, Kentucky. There are former blue bloods in Georgetown and UCLA then Michigan and Virginia. One thing to notice is Baldwin Jr might have a desire to play for a coach with NBA experience.
We’ll see if Wisconsin or UW-Milwaukee can crack his top five later this year.
Charlie.
