Going To The AFC Should Scare Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers might get moved. It is the headline from the weekend of the teams who lost. I think a lot of Green Bay Packers fans have come to peace with the idea that Rodgers is leaving and/or the Packers are ready for a fresh start. Rodgers already noted that he doesn’t want to be part of a rebuild (Fair), and if that’s the best option for Green Bay with their limited cap then so be it. Green Bay will not trade Rodgers to the NFC. They just won’t. That’s not something the Packers did with Brett Favre, and they will not do with Rodgers. The AFC looms, and if it does, that should terrify Rodgers.
My buddy Henni brought this up to me, and he’s right. Rodgers would have to deal with Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert all to get to the Super Bowl. That is a laundry list of good quarterbacks. And if you look at the NFC with Rodgers excluded, it’s Tom Brady, Matthew Stafford, Russell Wilson, Dak Prescott, Kyler Murray. If we looked at the two conferences like meat, the AFC is prime-cut, dry-aged ribeyes while the NFC is a grocery store flank steak. If Rodgers were to end up in Denver as many have assumed, he has to face Mahomes and Herbert twice a year. And what if Vegas trades for Wilson? He might not want to be part of a rebuild, but if it’s a quick retooling, it could save face.
Even if Rodgers decides to step down from the Packers and come back in a year, Green Bay still has his rights. They would have to release him during retirement. My guess is the Packers would not do that. The only reason Brett Favre ended up in Minnesota was that the New York Jets gave him that opportunity. If Rodgers goes full Favre then maybe, there is a chance of this happening.
It is the ultimate “careful what you wish for” for both sides. If the Packers deal Rodgers in the NFC, they’re asking for the showdown of a lifetime in the playoffs. And if Rodgers goes to the AFC, he has to deal with the best quarterbacks in football. Despite what happened on Saturday, Green Bay is his best option. But now, it’s hard to say if the Packers feel the same.
Charlie.
