Detroit Lions announced on Monday night that Matthew Stafford will be the richest player in the National Football League. You heard that right. Matthew Stafford will make all of the money with a five-year extension to keep with him with the organization. Let’s forget how he’s been an average quarterback for the Lions, and he can never find ways to beat Green Bay when it matters the most. The person who is thanking him today is Aaron Rodgers whose contract comes up next year. With Stafford at 27 million dollars per year, the sky is the limit for the best quarterback in the world.

Lions quarterback’s deal is a consistent trend we’ve seen throughout football where the average to above average quarterback’s deal is up or close to being up then the team offers them a handsome offer unless you’re named Kirk Cousins. This bodes well for Rodgers. He’s not above average, rather, stellar and the dollar signs he could be cashing in are astronomical. He’s worth every penny. And if you somehow think Packers can do better without him, you are making a grave mistake.

Ted Thompson is not known for spending money, but he would figure out how to navigate a deal for Rodgers. He’s not going to let Rodgers walk. I promise you that. There will be some hot take artists who believe Packers should not pony up that kind of deal. But what we’ve seen from Packers’ contracts before is Thompson finds a way to be creative like front-loading Sam Shields deal along with many others. Green Bay will make it as easy on themselves as possible. With his deal up after the 2018 season, we should start seeing the Packers working on the deal next summer.

Stafford will enjoy this season as a very rich man. Yes, he cannot seem to beat some of the better teams in football, but he’s made the Lions an average team on a regular basis instead of being the NFC North’s dumpster fire. He’s also good in the fourth quarter, but flaws do remain, therefore, I get the criticism about him.
