NFL Does Not Grant Mark Murphy’s Wish

In the National Football League, you can request certain weeks to be away from your home stadium. It does not mean that this will be granted by the league. Packers chairman Mark Murphy requested the Packers would be away from Lambeau Field in Week 3 and Week 4 to avoid adding chaos to the Ryder Cup crowds and Wisconsin-Notre Dame the following week. NFL did not give Murphy that luxury by putting the Packers on Monday Night Football two days after Badgers-Fighting Irish play on that same field. While the NFL does assist with giving the grounds crew an extra day, this has all the makings of a disaster.
How mad do you think Murphy was when he saw this earlier today? Do you think he is as mad as I am realizing I will miss this game because I’m at a wedding? Green Bay’s field team is probably already coming up with some sort of plan to figure out how to solve this and make sure the field is pristine for ESPN on Monday night. Green Bay doesn’t use grass as we see at Soldier Field and Heinz Field, rather, it’s an enhanced turf. If there is rain on Saturday, Green Bay is royally fucked.
You know who loves this though? ESPN and fans of Notre Dame and Wisconsin. ESPN will likely have College Gameday at Lambeau Field. They did a few years ago, and I assume the same happens in October. Monday Night Football and Gameday are different entities. Yet I bet there is a little crossover. For the fans attending Wisconsin-Notre Dame, they have a ripe and rare opportunity to do a double-dip with the Monday Night game.
This will be a huge storyline the week of the game barring all things go as they’re planned. This is the type of story the local news networks eat up and put it in their A-Block.
