Some have convinced themselves over the past few days that Green Bay might make a trade for a receiver. If Packers were to do a deal with a receiver, people would immediately forget about what they did in the draft. My assumption is those deals would happen right before or after June 1st pending on the contract. There is no official rumor that Odell Beckham Jr. or Julian Edelman is available to NFL teams. If they are, Green Bay, like they did in the NFL Draft and last season, will not give teams an arm and a leg for a receiver. Peter King reported Packers wanted to move up in round two for a receiver, and they could not get it done. The reason is they never want to overpay for this position.

Tried to trade for Robby Anderson
Tried to sign Emmanuel Sanders
Tried to trade up for a WR in the 2nd round

Pretty clear he would love to augment the talent at that position but refuses to overpay.

The players the Packers likely wanted Laviska Shenault or Chase Claypool. Those would be the two guys that fit the Packers’ profile of the desired receiver build. K.J. Hamler was also taken in the mid-second, but he is far too short and skinny to match what the Wolf-Thompson-Gutekunst system has done in the past. The first comment most will make is ‘Well if they didn’t give up a fourth-round pick for Jordan Love, they could have moved up.’ That’s not true. Packers did not have good draft capital in total this year drafting 30th. And with no compensatory picks in the fourth or fifth round, it made things difficult for Green Bay.

Could Packers make a move for a receiver before the season starts? Yes, absolutely. There are going to be young receivers too on the market with teams adding receivers to their team post-draft as well. Don’t be surprised if one or two more guys end up being on the team next Fall.
