With the PGA returning this weekend, I figured it would be a good idea to up our golf coverage. When UFC and NASCAR returned, I did not think to produce much content for either as my knowledge of both sports is next to nothing. But I do know golf. I did a podcast on Tuesday talking about what to watch for in the PGA if you’re a novice fan. To add to that, we’re going to preview the tournaments and add a recap at the end. This is a loaded field, and I expect golf tournaments to keep having heavy hitters.

The Course

It is a private course in Fort Worth, Texas. They’ve been playing golf there for a long time. It hosted a few majors, and it is a Par 70, therefore, a shorter course. The fifth hole runs right along Trinity River for the entire duration, and one of the top holes in America. The final three holes are a killer and can change a round from good to bad very quickly.

Golfers to watch

Jon Rahm – Even though this a short course, the Spaniard likes this course finishing T5 in 2018 and T2 in 2017. Rahm has 10 top three finishes in his last 18 tournaments with three outright wins. If he wins this tournament, Rahm becomes the world number one over Rory McIlroy. He’s playing out of his mind and the top contender in my eyes.

Webb Simpson – It is not surprising that Webb makes this list. He plays a shorter game than most guys on the tour, therefore, this set-up works well for him. Simpson has been on a heater to start the season too playing great golf. Simpson finished T5 or better in two of his last three visits to The Colonial.

Rory McIlroy – I wanted to provide a guy that was maybe a little bit less of a star, but we have to talk about Rory. He started to cook right before things shut down then played really well in the charity event. Knowing that Rahm is right on his back for the number one spot, I would not doubt him this weekend.

Sleepers

Jason Dufner – The Duf has not been heard from in a long time. But this is a course that exactly fits how he wants to play golf. He finished second twice at this tournament along with another top ten. He hasn’t had a great season thus far, but this is exactly a sleeper-type guy that come out of nowhere.

Ryan Palmer – He is a member at The Colonial. He knows this course better than most people. Palmer also has likely played this course without any fans. He might have a bit of a mental edge early on as players adjust to fanless golf. Don’t be surprised if Palmer is near the top on Saturday.

Prediction

I’m going with Webb Simpson. It would not shock me to see Rahm, McIlroy win this thing. But I expect a heavy hitter to win this tournament. This is a major-like field, and it would be surprising if a guy comes of nowhere to grab this title.

Charlie
