SnotapWI PGA Tour Preview: Rocket Mortgage Classic

PGA Tour heads west to Detroit for the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Hopefully, the start of the tournament will go better than what happened last week. If you recall, I wrote up a piece about the Travelers Championship and predicted Brooks Koepka to win. By mid-morning, Koepeka dropped out since his caddie tested positive for COVID-19. PGA made new rules on COVID testing and hope to limit the number of interactions. PGA hopes for a hiccup-free weekend in Detroit, but you never know. This is a newer tournament, therefore, we don’t have much course history to work off of but we’ll try our best.
The Course
Another week, another short course. This is a little different than what we saw last week though. People can get crazy off the tee box and make some big drives. There is no need to be conservative. Bubba Watson, who we will talk about in a second, has won this tournament three times. That is a great example of how a big hitter can succeed at this tournament. The course is a Par 70 with two par fives in total.
Golfers to watch
Viktor Hovland – Who will get the SnoTapWI curse this week? It might be Hovland. The Norweigan is playing great golf right now. He finished in the top 25 in the last two weeks. What concerns me is his finishing kick. The Saturday and Sunday performances are not lining up with what he is doing early on in the tournament. Chalk that up to inexperience. Hovland finished 13th here last year and wouldn’t surprise me if he wins this thing.
Doc Redman – Another talented young golfer that has been sneaking around with great results of late. Redman went out early at the Travelers and shot a 64. He ended up with an eleventh place finish. Redman finished right outside the top 20 at the RBC Heritage. The young gun from Clemson is playing good golf right now. This course seemed to fit him last year when he finished second to Nate Lashley.
Bryson DeChambeau – He is the best golfer in the tournament. Most of the top guys are taking this week off which makes sense. COVID concerns plus the tournament is being played over the 4th weekend. The Memorial is in two weeks with a tournament at the same location the week prior. Dechambeau is on his Wale game with #NoDaysOff. He has been awesome since the return with two top 10 finishes each week. It is easy to see why he is the chalk this week. 6-1 is probably not good enough for me to bet it but DeChambeau has a good shot to win it.
Tyrell Hatton – Here’s a guy that is doing things a bit differently. Hatton played two weeks ago but took The Colonial and Travelers off. Hatton looked great in his last outing and couldn’t finish the deal. The field is a little weaker this week, and I wouldn’t be shocked if he wins this one.
Prediction
We are currently 0-3 in predictions for guys missing the cut. Yes, 0-3. The stink is fucking real here. I’m taking Viktor Hovland though. He is playing good golf. I believe this a good opportunity for him to take advantage of.
Charlie.
