Cleveland Cavaliers taking the NBA Championship. During my three-month hiatus, I thought a lot about ‘How would I write about this?’ I don’t know if I could have put into words what I watched happened in the final three games. NBA Playoffs were crazy good and crazy bad at the same thing. Basically, it was a night at a shitty bar like Dukes. There are some awesome moments at the bar, and there can also be real clunkers.
Chicago Cubs continue to own the baseball world. They’re going to be the biggest story of the Fall. FOX could actually see legitimate high ratings if the Cubs make it to the World Series. Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Jake Arrieta and Kyle Hendricks are all major players. The American League will be absolutely nuts until the final day of the year. Baseball also saw the New York Yankees rebuild their franchise with retirements of Mark Texieria at the end of the year, and Alex Rodriguez stepping down mid-year.
Rio Olympics were all over the place with the success of Simone Biles, Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky, Aly Raisman and Usain Bolt. All of those stories are amazing, but we’ll be forgotten as Ryan Lochte, not Boogie Cousins, caused an international incident. I don’t really care that Lochte tried to snake his way out of doing something stupid, we’ve all be there.
When we stopped blogging, Harambe’s death happened but no one expected the dead gorilla to be a cultural meme by mid-August. It’s amazing and it has some unreal staying power. They are t-shirts, signs at football games along with countless other things.
Drake is the top artist in 2016. He’s more popular than anyone out there right now. Views wasn’t even a great album, but his ‘Summer Sixteen’ tour is captivating America plus “One Dance” is the song of the summer with “Cheap Thrills” taking the sliver.
Copa America happened where the United States had a fourth-place showing, and everyone seemed pleased even if they were destroyed by Argentina. What gets forgotten is how bad they looked in the first game of the group stage versus Columbia, and everyone thought Jurgen Klinsmann wouldn’t make the end of the tournament. Chile was victorious again with an epic chokejob by Lionel Messi.
Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson take home majors. Both were two of the best golfers without a major, and now, they both have one. Johnson had to fight off the ridiculous USGA to win his U.S. Open while Stenson outdueled Phil Mickelson. He would later add a gold medal at the Rio Olympics. We’ll just forget about Jimmy Walker.
