National Football League is starting to look at their upcoming season, and some tweaks are being made. They’re looking at how could things be easier on the players headed back to their facilities. With there being no OTAs or any sort of training sessions leading up to training camp, preseason has become on the chopping block. Most NFL fans would like to see only two preseason games as the games are usually boring as sin. But taking away two preseason games limits the chances for some unknown player to set up and make the team. With the Packers, we’ve seen guys make the roster after awesome preseasons.

It does make sense to limit preseason. The revenue gained from preseason is limited, and the NFL could get more time to wonder if fans are going to be in the stands starting in September. My assumption is they’re paying attention to everything across the world, not just the country when it comes to bringing fans back. NFL wants to have everything figured out before the regular season starts in September. This gives them more time. While preseason being cut leads to fewer opportunities for fringe players, it might ensure normalcy in September.

While so much of the NFL is fan-focused, the preseason isn’t really for any of us. It is for coaches to find gems in the rough or for guys to stand out as undrafted free agents. All parties could agree that the fourth preseason game is truly meaningless. By that time, cuts are pretty much known and it is a pure form of an exhibition with barely any starters out there. One or two preseason games might mean more starters for a longer period time which makes it more fan-focused.
