As someone who had other things on Saturday, it was a joy watching bits and pieces of the Badgers game on Sunday night. They really played a good football game after a huge win against LSU the week prior. They could have slept walked the first half, but that didn’t happen at all. Wisconsin set the tone early on and never looked back. It was great to see Wisconsin put up those kind of points against an opponent. They haven’t done that in quite some time.
Key Takeaways
Bart Houston might be the real deal – If you missed it, Barstool Sports sells ‘Bart Heisman’ t-shirts. It’s a playful joke made on their daily show “Barstool Rundown” plus Dan Katz is a Wisconsin grad. I’m not sure if it will be joke if Houston goes into the Michigan’s and dominates in the coming weeks. Bart looked really good out there. Jazz Peavy had his best day as a Badger with 100 yards on seven catches with two touchdowns. Houston finished with 231 yards and two touchdowns. He had control of the pocket all game long and spread it out to eight different receivers. Badgers haven’t had that sort of passing offense in quite some time. It speaks to what Paul Chryst is establishing at Wisconsin.
Defense continues to be monsters – Some wondered how Justin Wilcox’s defense would handle the spread of Akron’s since Dave Aranda did such a good job defending it. The answer is… They passed the test. Badgers defense has allowed a total of 17 points so far this season. That’s a great start to the season. When you have a strong defense, there are playmakers all over the field and that’s what Wisconsin has this year. So many different guys are stepping up and making plays on a regular basis. Leo Musso, T.J. Watt and Alec James all had a great performances on Saturday afternoon.
Corey Clement seems to be okay – Badgers fans had a bit of a scare when Corey Clement was pulled from the game with tape around both ankles. Thankfully, the injury hadn’t been too severe and Clement could have gone if they were playing a more meaningful game. It will be interesting to see how much they use him against Georgia State next week with Michigan State looming in two weeks. That being said, Bradrick Shaw and Taiwan Deal both had nice days filling in for him.
Next up
Wisconsin will welcome Georgia State to Madison. They’ve had a rough go of it to start the season therefore don’t be surprised if this one gets out of hand.
