BrewCap: Jesus Touches City of Pittsburgh
Milwaukee Brewers had a hell of a road trip. In both St. Louis and Pittsburgh the team dealt with rain, and the conditions were not well for the first two games against Pirates. But the sun was shining on the last game of the road trip, and Brewers bats responded with three home runs. Jesus Aguliar provided some much needed offense and defense off the bench for Milwaukee as Craig’s Crushers go 3-3 on the road and head home for a week with a day off tomorrow.
Player of the Game: Jesus Aguliar (Brewers) – I don’t think Aguliar was never on the ropes for a roster spot, but the last week he showed some worth to the team. First with his pinch-hit home run on Thursday night, and then on Sunday with some major moments to propel Milwaukee to victory. He hit a ground-rule double padding Brewers lead then made a nifty defensive scoop at first to prevent any damage and another home run which was the cherry on top. I’ll be interested to see if Aguliar finds his way into the lineup at Miller Park.
(Not) Player of the Game: Hernan Perez (Brewers) – I’m not going to beat up on Harry Perry here. He had an awesome road trip. But this was not a good game for him. Perez went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts leaving three runners in scoring positions. Big takeaway from this road trip without Ryan Braun is Milwaukee showed off their depth.
Player of the Game: Gregory Polanco (Pirates) – Not many good days from Pirates as Zach Davies shut down their bats for their most part minus one mistake pitch. Polanco did have a nice game going 2-for-2 with a run scored and two walks. Clint Hurdle ran a skeleton Sunday crew, and Polanco made the most of it.
Positive: Zach Davies turns in another good start It’s fair to say a turnaround happened with Zach Davies over the last several starts. He continued to look good out there going nearly six innings with two runs on one bad pitch to Jose Osuna, and struck out seven batters while walking two. Davies needs to go longer in games, but we’ll worry about that on another write up.
Negative: Brewers could have blew this open – Milwaukee had their chances with runners in scoring position. Jonathan Villar left two ducks on the pond, and Perez left three in scoring position. Brewers had the long ball going to solve their problems, but they need to be better there.
Next up: Milwaukee welcomes Boston to Miller Park for the first time in 14 years. Sadly for Brewers, this is the wrong time to play Red Sox. John Farrell made a lineup change, and holy hell, it’s legit thus far scoring 28 runs in the last two games. These three games set up nicely for Milwaukee with two left handers and Kyle Kendrick’s corpse so who knows. These could be five hours ball games if these offense hum right.
