BrewCap Weekend Wrap: Brewers Find Offense vs. Mets
There will be weeks where I sadly cannot write/talk about the Milwaukee Brewers over a full weekend. It is not my favorite thing honestly, but it has to happen from time to time due to scheduling or not having all the time in the world to blog about my sports teams. Over the weekend, the latter took place for the Brewers. We had our NFL Draft content go out, and that really was the stuff we wanted to cover over the weekend. We did mention the Brewers a little bit on Saturday looking back at Lorenzo Cain’s great catch. We’re going to start with Sunday and work our way back throughout the weekend to talk about what Milwaukee di versus the Mets.
SUNDAY: Mets 5 Brewers 2
Player of the Game: Steven Matz – This is a guy who is making a legitimate case to be part of the Brewers killer club for pitchers. Matz dominated the Brewers last year in two starts and does the same on Sunday. He made one bad pitch to Mike Moustakas which tied up the game, but other than that, Matz cruised versus a Milwaukee offense that got rolling on Friday and Saturday.
Game’s headline: Christian Yelich goes down – We will await the news on Christian Yelich’s back. Hopefully, it is not too serious, and he will be able to play in the coming series versus Colorado. With the combination of a cold day then traveling on a plane, the back discomfort might still be there on Monday. The worry time for Yelich and the Injured List is if he misses Monday and Tuesday.
SATURDAY: Brewers 8 Mets 6
Player of the Game: Ben Gamel – Some people question if Ben Gamel is good enough to be the fourth outfielder for the Brewers. I could see that. He isn’t exactly going to light the world on fire with his bat, but typically, Gamel plays a good outfield. That being said, the offense he showed on Saturday night was awesome. He hit 9th and provided the Crew with a home run, double and two walks. Gamel scored three times aiding the Brewers to victory, 8-6.
Game’s headline: Brewers survive Mets’ comeback – Things got a little hairy for the Crew against New York on Saturday night. Brewers looked to be cruising up 6-1 then Alex Wilson and Alex Claudio were both awful out of the bullpen. This game became a 6-5 ball game for a quick second before Milwaukee provided two more insurance runs. Josh Hader shut the down with five strikeouts over two innings to finish off New York.
FRIDAY: Brewers 10 Mets 2
Player of the Game: Lorenzo Cain – In what has been a pedestrian offensive start for Lorenzo Cain this season, he had a great game on Friday. He had a bases-clearing double that broke the game wide-open and made the catch of the year thus far. That catch to me was the spark Milwaukee needed to start their offense.
Game’s headline: Worth the wait – Milwaukee sat through a near three-hour rain delay to play this one. It didn’t seem to bother Brewers. They attacked Jacob deGrom early and often. Very impressive job from the Crew against him putting up five runs against him.
Next up: Milwaukee comes home to play Colorado for a four-game set. Rockies nearly swept Atlanta on the road until Seunghawn Oh gave up a three-run homer to Josh Donaldson in the bottom of the eighth inning. Rockies have won eleven of their last 14 games, so, they’re playing good ball. Their pitching has been shaky at best which means slugfests. Brewers send Zach Davies to hill to face Kyle Freeland, the Rockies ace. He is coming off the Injured List to face the Crew and it’s his first time at Miller Park.
