Brewers Look For Right Combination of Bullpen Arms
Milwaukee Brewers decided to shake up their bullpen before their first of 10 games at home. Brewers ushered out multiple players out of the bullpen. Alex Wilson received a designation for assignment. Same thing happened to Jake Petricka on Sunday when Milwaukee brought Gio Gonzalez on the team. Aaron Wilkerson went on the Injured List with a foot injury. Those are three bullpen arms who all saw action in the last series against New York. Brewers brought in Jay Jackson, Donnie Hart to see if they can be the missing ingredients to the Brewers bullpen.
My podcast partner Mitch Ross always talks about the weirdness of bullpens, and he could not be more correct. A random bullpen pitcher can somehow end up be one of your most valued arms by the stretch run. Not saying that will happen with Hart or Jackson, yet, it is good to see the Brewers try out new options. Jackson has a unique story you’ll hear every time he heads to the mound. He played the last three years in Japan, and he only pitched six total innings in the big leagues for his career. Jackson throws straight gas and could be another gem in the David Stearns. He did enter game on Monday to strike out Nolan Arenado on four pitches.
Hart returned to the team for his second time around and pitched four outs to close out the game for the Brewers on Monday. This means Milwaukee has three lefties in the bullpen which seems like something they haven’t had in years. It gives Craig Counsell a lot to work with in the upcoming games. Hart did not impress in Triple A, but he does have experience pitching in the big leagues. Hart’s numbers in Triple A do not give you much confidence, but sometimes, that can be a sign of lacking motivation.
If these bullpen arms do not work, the Brewers will head back to the table and look for more until they find the right combination that can carry them far this season.
