BrewCap: Davies & Aguilar Carry Crew over Rockies
Milwaukee Brewers’ starting rotation received a brunt of criticism in the first month of the year. But not enough people are talking about how good Zach Davies has been this season. He gave up his first run at Miller Park on Monday night. Davies carries a 1.38 ERA to start the season, and he is currently pitching like the ‘ace’ of this staff. Now, he is not working long outings with his longest of the year being at seven innings versus Los Angeles, but Davies did damn well weathering the first month storm. Brewers right-hander had another solid outing as the Brewers win game one of their four game set with the Colorado Rockies.
Player of the Game; Jesus Aguilar – I know I praised Davies in the open, but Jesus Aguilar deserves just as much as credit as Zach. Before the game, Craig Counsell said that ‘Aguilar needed to produce results.’ He did just that versus a left-hander. Jesus belted two home runs driving in four runs. That’s major for Milwaukee. If the Brewers can get regular production from him and Eric Thames on both sides of the batter’s box, look out National League. Hopefully, this isn’t a one-time thing.
Co-Player of the Game: Zach Davies – One of the encouraging things about Davies’ fast start is how he is pitching at Miller Park. Typically, he is not a good home park pitcher. He carried a high ERA at home in 2017 when the righty had a great year for the team. This year that has not reared its ugly head. Yasmani Grandal deserves some credit for the way he frames up Zach. It’s apparent that is adding some of his success on the mount. t
Thing I liked: Early inning runs! – A theme of the Milwaukee Brewers’ season in 2018 was early-inning runs. We haven’t seen much from the Brewers this season, therefore, it’s nice to see it show up again on Monday night with four runs early on. Brewers attacked from the get-go on Kyle Freeland, a very good pitcher. Brewers ended up with six hits on four runs in the first inning.
Thing I didn’t like: Christian Yelich’s back problems – Not to say I called this, but I called this, Yelich missed Monday’s game with a back problem. I’m not surprised in the slightest considering it is a day after the injury plus a lefty on the mound (Not that Yelich worries about that kind of thing). Brewers are taking it day-by-day, and my guess is they will not make a move to the Injured List until at least after Wednesday’s game.

Next up: Milwaukee and Colorado will go for Game 2 on Tuesday night. Jhoulys Chacin gets the ball for Milwaukee, and he will try to get right as he had a rough April. Chacin has allowed two or more runs in each of his starts this season. He did pitch well against his former team last year. Rockies will send German Marquez, the tough right-hander. Marquez has been solid this year and ace-like on the road. He only allowed one run in three road starts this season, although, two were against San Francisco and Miami.
