Gary and Sternberger To Wear Popular Packers Numbers
There are only so many numbers that a Packers player could wear in the upcoming season. Numbers are also a funny thing because it is not like college where the guys can wear whatever they want or they get a special number like how all the great Michigan wide receivers would wear number one. All of the new Packers rookies received their numbers today. Two rookies received two of the most popular numbers in Packers recent history.
Rashan Gary will be wearing number 52. That number belonged to Clay Matthews for the last decade. It is a number that all types of Packers fans wore on jerseys, shirseys and other items for years. It will now belong to Gary. Some fans saw it as ‘cold’ that the Packers would move on from Matthews after he left this offseason for the Los Angeles Rams. Guess what? It’s a fucking number. I get we all have a fondness for it, but there are only so many that a linebacker can wear for this team.
Gary isn’t the only one to wear a popular number. Jace Sternberger will be rocking 87. Yes, Jordy Nelson’s number. People are crestfallen to learn that Jordy’s number gets replaced with someone else wearing it. Yes, I know it’s hard to believe that the deity known as Nelson will no longer be the player wearing 87. That this 87 will have a tattoo sleeve. Consider this, Rob Gronkowski and Travis Kelce also wore this number and they’re fucking great. Here is the other thing about 87, Robert Brooks wore in the 90’s and had some great years. The legendary Willie Davis wore this number too. It is one that has been around in Packers lore for longer than just Jordy.
Many Packers fans are upset that Darnell Savage Jr. did not wear 21. As in ’21 Savage’, the very popular rapper. 21 is also a popular number that belonged to Charles Woodson and would have drawn a similar reaction by Packers fans. But again, it is just a number.
Charlie.
