Brewers Showed They Belong This Weekend
You could look at Milwaukee Brewers weekend in a few different ways. One is they should be on a five-game winning streak and up a couple games on the Chicago Cubs with St. Louis Cardinals faltering with a sweep on the hands of Chicago Cubs. The other is they had leads against Los Angeles Dodgers in all three games this weekend, and Dodgers are likely a playoff team who had been red-hot. Brewers showed to me that they can play with anyone in the league this weekend, and that’s an encouraging sign to see.
Milwaukee gave the look of a playoff team. I know fans want to shit on this team every chance they get looking for the next opportunity to tell people this is hurting the rebuild, but they’re contenders at this point. Jimmy Nelson’s strong pitching outing on Friday was something else. Milwaukee’s bats failing to let them lose on Saturday was a complete other thing then Zach Davies showing some life on Sunday.
Brewers have a chance in June to make some noise. The only team they play with a .500 or better is this weekend against Diamondbacks, and if Cardinals have a good week, they’ll be the other one. The St. Louis matchup will be a big one next week in the Arch. Other than that, Milwaukee sees a ton of sub .500 teams this month, and it could be the right time to push out their lead in the NL Central. They have to take advantage of what the schedule provides to them this month.
Milwaukee went through some growing pains this past weekend, but hopefully, they are the ones that make you stronger throughout the year. Corey Knebel will find a way to avoid giving up the big fly at Miller Park. Craig Counsell will think about what his bullpen looks like when Jacob Barnes and Knebel can’t go or maybe, he’ll want to avoid that all together.
Brewers begin a series with San Francisco tonight.
