The Conference Pissing Match Is Out Of Control

When Michigan advanced to Sweet 16 on Sunday afternoon, every Big Ten fan ran to their keyboard to talk about how ‘Big 10 wasn’t actually down this season.’ For some reason, fans believe that the best way to talk about a conference is to judge on the NCAA Tournament which is a single-elimination contest that goes for three weeks. Big Ten still didn’t have a good year. ACC is the Peyton Manning of conferences, and others have things to talk about this week yet it all matters very little.
Big Ten should hold its hat on the three teams advancing – Wisconsin, Michigan and Purdue. For Boilermakers, they finally broke through to the Sweet 16 after a six-year drought. Michigan continues their run, and we all know about Wisconsin. It’s a banner weekend for Big Ten, but nothing worth changing course on the opinion of the league itself. They still had two of double-digit upsets go against them in a chalk year with Minnesota and Maryland both losing. Big Ten has teams like the three above who are built for March runs especially Wisconsin.
To me, it’s not the ACC’s fault they are only left with North Carolina. The NCAA Tournament Committee, as mentioned on Sunday, overvalued the ACC as a whole. Duke was really the only team who received any conference tournament credit, and they should have been a three. Florida State had no business around the three line. Virginia’s blowout suggests they weren’t a true five. tLouisville’s two made sense even if they didn’t look good in either game they played in the tournament. ACC is licking its wounds with Carolina being the only one left after a brutal weekend. They still had a great regular season.
What about the SEC or Pac-12? They both have three teams in the Sweet 16. For the SEC, it’s been unexpected to see teams still finding their way to the second weekend. PAC-12 did their business with all of their top seeds – Arizona, UCLA and Oregon all advancing. PAC-12 could come out of this whole conference dick measuring contest with the victory. They could potentially have three of the four Final Four teams. Highly unlikely, but it’s a still a possibility.
No matter how conferences do in the second weekend, remember that it doesn’t really matter. Sometimes, conferences need validation, but we’re pretty set with what we’ve seen from everyone in the NCAA Tournament.
