Elgton Jenkins Provides Much-Needed O-Line Support
Many NFL Draft experts believed the Green Bay Packers were going to draft an interior offensive lineman. They need support at the guard position. When the Denver Broncos drafted Packers Twitter favorite Dalton Risner, people believed they might look for a guard in the later rounds. Not so fast my friend, Green Bay drafted Elgton Jenkins from Mississippi State. He played center the last two years for the Bulldogs. This is a solid pick by Brian Gutekunst and team. Linemen are never sexy picks, but if they have the skills, we see them starting on Day 1.
Jenkins is a guy that we did not hear much about during the draft process, but that should not surprise anyone. He is an interior lineman. There are a few names then it is a host of nobodies. Jenkins is an experienced lineman dealing with the SEC’s best defensive lineman game in and game out. Add to that, he dealt with two first-round picks in practice every day – Montez Sweat and Jeffery Simmons. Packers scouts believe he can play all five positions on the line. I’m not sure if he can play tackle, but the fact, there’s a chance is good enough for me.
When you’re looking at lineman prospects, they can sometimes be only good at run or pass blocking. Jenkins can do both. He only allowed one sack and four hurries total in his entire college career. He checked in as the 13th overall best prospect when it came to run blocking. Yes, the run blocking numbers might not be as high as Packers fans would like but it’s not like he is inept at doing it.
Jenkins will not start Day 1, but he gets the chance compete for a spot with the likes of Billy Turner, Cole Madison and Lane Taylor. From last year to this year, Green Bay made a stark improvement on their offensive line. They have the depth that has been missing for the last two years.
