Twitter is a weird place these days. I follow a lot of sportspeople – Writers, athletes, personalities, friends, and others I’ve met along the way. I’ve muted some, unfollowed others and just let others hang out on the timeline. It has been interesting to watch Giannis Antetokounmpo during the quarantine. He seems to be missing basketball a great deal but has been more interactive than ever before. One thing Giannis is doing is getting out the vote for Pat Riddlespringer to be the best player in Fresno State basketball history. Some of you may have noticed this and if so, you wondered why? The answer is simple, Pat is his girlfriend’s Mariah’s father.

Because Giannis has over a million Twitter followers, he is pushing people to vote for Pat even though Riddlespringer is a 15th seed in the tournament. As someone who does social media for a living, I’m curious to know how Fresno folks feel about Giannis rigging their tournament. On one hand, Giannis gives them a ton of popularity and awareness to a contest only the Fresno faithful paid attention to. On the other hand, a 15 seed is totally winning this thing. Cool to see Giannis do that for his girlfriend’s father.

I’m also very glad that Giannis is not American. If he was, there would be an asshole journalist with some amazing pivot about how Giannis should be using his voice to tell people to vote in the State of Wisconsin. If you wonder why that would happen, just know the media will always find the way to suck the energy out of something fun.
